Is HelloTalk Free? What You Get Without VIP (2026)

Yes, HelloTalk is free: you can download it, find partners, chat by text and voice, make voice and video calls, post on Moments and correct each other without paying anything. The free plan has daily caps on a handful of tools (10 new partners, 10 translations, and limits on transliteration, voice-to-text, AI correction and Voicerooms time) and shows ads; HelloTalk VIP lifts those caps and removes the ads.
Everything below comes from HelloTalk’s own help center, blog and app store listings at the time of writing (September 2026). We do not quote prices because HelloTalk sets them per country and shows them in the app. We make a different language exchange app, LangX, so we mention it once near the end and otherwise stick to HelloTalk.
What is free on HelloTalk?
The core of HelloTalk, the language exchange itself, costs nothing. On the free plan you can:
- Chat one-to-one with native speakers by text and voice message. HelloTalk says there is no cap on how much you talk with partners you already have.
- Make voice and video calls. HelloTalk’s FAQ says calls are “free for all HelloTalk users” and have no time limit.
- Post on Moments, its public feed, and get your posts corrected by native speakers. You can correct other people’s posts too.
- Correct messages in chat, using HelloTalk’s correction tool to mark up what your partner wrote.
- Join Voicerooms and livestreams, the live audio rooms and streamed lessons.
- Use text-to-speech to hear messages read aloud.
- Search for partners by language, level and region, and set up a full profile.
For most people, that is a complete language exchange app. You can practice every day for months without hitting a wall, as long as you do not lean heavily on the tools below.
What does HelloTalk limit on the free plan?
The free plan caps the tools that cost HelloTalk money to run or that could be used for spam. Here is what applies at the time of writing:

| Voice and video calls | Free, no time limit | Free, no time limit |
| Moments posts and corrections | Free | Free, plus filter Moments by language |
| New partners you can contact | 10 a day | 25 a day |
| Translation | 10 a day | Unlimited |
| Transliteration | Daily cap | Unlimited |
| Voice-to-text (transcription) | Daily cap | Unlimited |
| AI correction in chat | Daily cap | Unlimited |
| Voicerooms | Up to 90 minutes a day | Unlimited |
| Captions in Voicerooms and livestreams | No | Yes |
| Languages you can learn | One | Several, and change them anytime |

| See who visited your profile | No | Yes, and hide your own visits |
| Ads | Yes | No ads |
Table: HelloTalk free vs VIP, from HelloTalk’s FAQ and blog (September 2026).
A few notes on the numbers:
- The 10 new partners a day is an anti-spam limit, according to HelloTalk’s FAQ. It only counts people you have not messaged before; replying to existing partners is not capped.
- The 10 translations a day apply across the whole app, including chats and Moments, not just one conversation.
- Voicerooms: HelloTalk’s FAQ says regular members can join for up to 90 minutes a day, resetting at midnight local time.
- HelloTalk does not publish exact daily numbers for transliteration, voice-to-text or AI correction in its FAQ, so we have left them as “daily cap”.
Does HelloTalk have ads?
Yes. The free version shows ads, and “No Ads” is the first item on HelloTalk’s own list of VIP benefits. Its Google Play listing is marked as containing ads and in-app purchases. HelloTalk’s privacy policy says it may share information such as interests, age and device type with ad networks to personalize ads, and that you can turn personalized ads off in Settings → Privacy → Personalized Ads. That does not remove the ads, but it limits how they are targeted. Our post Is HelloTalk safe? goes through the privacy policy in more detail.
What does HelloTalk VIP add?
HelloTalk’s FAQ lists these VIP benefits:
- No ads
- Unlimited translation, transliteration and voice-to-text
- Contact 25 new partners a day instead of 10
- Choose the target language for translations in chat settings
- Learn more than one language, and change your learning and teaching languages at any time
- Captions in livestreams and Voicerooms
- Search for nearby members and by gender
- Filter Moments by language
- See who visited your profile, and hide your own visits
- Exclusive stickers and greeting cards
HelloTalk’s own blog frames VIP as convenience rather than the learning itself, and that is fair. VIP matters most if you are a beginner who translates nearly every message, if you learn a new script and use transliteration constantly, or if you want to learn two languages at once.
How to get the most out of HelloTalk for free
If you would rather not pay, a few habits stretch the free plan a long way:
- Spend your 10 new contacts carefully. Read profiles first and write a real first message instead of greeting everyone. A good opener gets more replies than ten “hi”s. Our guide on how to find a language exchange partner has message templates.
- Save translations for what matters. Try to read a message first, then translate only the sentence you cannot work out. Long-pressing a single word in a dictionary app on your phone often does the job without using a HelloTalk translation.
- Ask partners to correct you. Corrections are free and teach more than translation does. Ask your partner to correct one or two messages each session.
- Use Moments for quick feedback. Posting one sentence and letting several native speakers correct it costs nothing and does not use a new-partner contact.
- Call instead of typing. Calls are free and unlimited, and speaking is the skill most learners lack. Our language exchange conversation topics help fill the first few minutes.
- Build vocabulary outside the app. Learning the most common words in your target language before you chat means fewer translations in the first place.
Free alternatives to HelloTalk
If HelloTalk’s caps or ads bother you, there are other free options. Our roundup of free language exchange apps compares what each free tier includes, including Tandem (see Is Tandem free?), Speaky and InterPals.
LangX is our own app, so weigh this accordingly. Its free plan has no ads, unlimited replies and unlimited corrections (you hold any message to correct it), 20 translations a day and 5 new conversations a day. Its limits are real: 5 new conversations is fewer than HelloTalk’s 10, there are no live calls (you practice with text plus voice, photo and video messages), there is nothing like Moments’ reach or Voicerooms, and the community is far smaller. The code is open source, which is the main reason people compare it with HelloTalk; LangX vs HelloTalk covers the full picture, and the plans page lists every limit.
FAQ
Is HelloTalk completely free?
The core app is free: chat, voice messages, calls, Moments, corrections, Voicerooms and livestreams. Some tools have daily caps on the free plan, and the free version shows ads. HelloTalk VIP is an optional subscription that removes the caps and the ads.
How many translations do you get on HelloTalk for free?
HelloTalk’s FAQ says free members get 10 translations a day, counted across the whole app. VIP members get unlimited translations.
How many people can you message on HelloTalk for free?
Free members can contact 10 new partners a day; VIP members can contact 25. Messages to people you already talk with are not limited.
Are HelloTalk calls free?
Yes. HelloTalk says voice and video calls are free for all users with no time limit.
Is HelloTalk VIP worth it?
It depends on how you use the app. If you translate often, learn a new script, want to learn several languages, or dislike ads, VIP removes real friction. If you mostly chat, call and use Moments, the free plan covers it.
