Is Tandem Free? What You Get Without Pro (2026)
Yes, Tandem is free: once your profile is approved you can chat, send voice messages, make audio and video calls and correct each other without paying. The free plan caps you at 10 new conversations and 3 translations a day, one learning language and an hour a day in Language Parties, and it shows ads; Tandem Pro lifts those limits, removes the ads and adds an AI toolkit.
Everything below comes from Tandem’s own app overview, FAQ and store listings at the time of writing (September 2026). We do not quote prices, since Tandem sets them by country and shows them in the app. We make a different app, LangX, and mention it briefly near the end.
What is free on Tandem?
Tandem’s own overview lists what every member gets without paying:
- Text chat with your language exchange partners.
- Audio messages and image sharing.
- Audio and video calls inside the app.
- Inline corrections, so a partner can fix a message and you see the fix next to what you wrote.
- The Community tab, where you browse members and filter by language and other basics.
- Language Parties, Tandem’s live audio rooms, for up to an hour a day.
There is one thing that is free but not instant: every new profile goes through an application review before you can message anyone. That is not a paid step, but it can mean a wait. Tandem’s FAQ says it rejects applications without a real photo or name and from people under 16, and that there is occasionally a waitlist in some countries to keep languages balanced. What these limits mean in practice:
- 3 translations a day is the limit beginners feel first. If you cannot yet read most of what your partner writes, three goes quickly.
- 10 new conversations a day is plenty for most people. It only counts conversations you start. Replying to people and talking with existing partners is not limited.
- One language only matters if you learn two at once.
- An hour of Parties is a lot of listening practice; most people will not hit it.
Does Tandem have ads?
Yes. The free version shows ads, and “no ads” is one of the things Tandem Pro includes. The app’s Google Play listing is marked as containing ads and in-app purchases. Tandem’s privacy policy names ad partners including AdMob, AppLovin and Meta Audience Network, and says you can switch off ad personalization in your device settings. What does Tandem Pro add?
Beyond lifting the limits in the table, Tandem Pro’s main draw is its AI toolkit: a grammar check before you send, word definitions, conversation-starter suggestions, a rewrite tool to make a message sound more natural, and “Explain Corrections”, which tells you why your partner changed something. Pro also adds Nearby and Travel search for finding partners in your city or somewhere you are visiting, up to 10 languages on your profile, unlimited Party time with the option to host private Parties, a custom Tandem ID, exclusive emojis and a Pro badge.
Is it worth it? Pro makes the most sense if you are a beginner who needs translation often, if you want explanations of your mistakes rather than just fixes, or if you travel and want to meet partners in person. If you mostly chat and call with one or two regular partners, the free plan covers that well.
How to get the most out of Tandem for free
- Write a strong application. Tandem reviews answers in its onboarding questions, and its help center says answers that are too short or written just to get past the questions do not help. Use a clear, recent photo of your face and your real name.
- Make your 10 daily conversations count. Read profiles and open with a specific question instead of “hi”. Our guide on how to find a language exchange partner has first-message templates that get replies.
- Save your 3 translations. Try to understand a message first, and ask your partner to rephrase in simpler words, which is itself good practice. Translate only what you truly cannot follow.
- Lean on corrections and calls. Both are free and unlimited. Ask your partner to correct a couple of messages each session, and move to a short call once you are comfortable. These conversation topics help with the first few minutes.
- Use Parties for listening. An hour a day of free live audio is generous listening practice, even if you only listen.
- Learn core vocabulary outside the app. Knowing the most common words in your target language means fewer translations in the first place.
