Is Tandem Safe? Profile Reviews, Privacy and Safety Tips (2026)

Tandem is one of the more carefully moderated language exchange apps: every new profile is reviewed before it can message anyone, members must be 16 or older with a real photo and name, and a Community Safety team reviews reports. It is not risk-free, though. Some members still use it for flirting or scams, and the free app shares data with advertising partners, so it pays to know how the safety tools and the privacy policy work.

#How Tandem’s application review works

The feature that sets Tandem apart is the review at the door. When you sign up, you fill in a profile and answer some onboarding questions, and Tandem’s team reviews the application before you can message anyone.

According to Tandem’s FAQ and help center:

• Applications can be rejected if you are under 16, or if you have not used a real profile photo or a real name.
• The team reads your onboarding answers, and answers that are too short or written just to get through the questions do not help.
• Each application is reviewed individually, which takes time, and there is occasionally a waitlist in some countries to keep the community and its languages balanced.
• If you have not been accepted after 7 days, you can delete your application yourself.

The review screens out some fake profiles before they reach anyone, a real safety benefit. The cost is waiting: public reviews include people who say they waited weeks or longer, or were never approved, without a clear reason. Our post Is Tandem free? covers what you get once you are in.

#Reporting and blocking on Tandem

To report someone, tap the three dots at the top right of a chat, or the warning mark (!) on their profile, choose a reason, add details and tap Report to Tandem. You can also report from inside a Language Party. Tandem asks you to attach the conversation as evidence; its FAQ says the Community Safety team reviews each report and warns or bans members who broke the guidelines, and the reported member is not told it was you.

Block is in the same menus. A blocked member can no longer message you, though Tandem notes they may still see you in Language Parties, which are public.

#What Tandem’s community guidelines say

Tandem’s guidelines rest on three principles (members are there to learn, diversity is celebrated, people share generously), and several rules matter for safety:

• “Tandem is not a dating app.” The guidelines ask members to refrain from suggestive, flirtatious or sexual content.
• No money requests. Asking for money, promoting investment schemes or using emotional manipulation for material gain is banned.
• Protecting minors: Tandem states a zero-tolerance policy on child exploitation and restricts what under-18s can access.
• Enforcement: actions range from a reminder or warning to removing content, restricting features or banning an account. Its FAQ says a second warning within six months typically leads to a ban.

#Common problems Tandem users report

The review process helps, but it does not catch everyone, and public reviews, for example on Trustpilot, mention a few recurring issues:

• Dating-style messages. Some members contact people for flirting rather than language practice. It is against the rules, so report and block.
• Scams. Reviewers describe people who quickly ask to move to WhatsApp or another messenger. Money requests and investment pitches are the classic sign.
• Moderation disputes. Some users say they were suspended without a clear explanation, or that enforcement felt inconsistent. Tandem says members can appeal.
• Waiting to be approved, as described above.

To be fair, many reviewers also describe good partners and useful corrections.

#What Tandem’s privacy policy says

Tandem’s privacy policy (dated 24 April 2026 at the time of writing) is written for EU data protection law. The highlights:

• Who runs it: Tripod Technology GmbH, a company in Germany, with an external data protection officer.
• Where data is hosted: the policy lists providers including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure, and says data is transferred outside the European Economic Area, naming countries including the USA, India and China under Standard Contractual Clauses.
• What it collects: profile details and photos, messages, location data, device identifiers and IP addresses.
• Messages: messages are stored to run the service and not shared with third parties unless required by law. If you delete your account, your personal information is deleted, but messages you sent stay with the partner you sent them to.
• Calls and Parties: Tandem says it does not monitor, record or store audio calls, video calls or Party conversations.
• AI features: the policy lists OpenAI as a provider for back-end services, processing things like profile details and message content, including images and audio.
• Advertising and analytics: it names Google Analytics, Firebase, Adjust and ad partners including AdMob, AppLovin and Meta Audience Network. You can limit ad personalization in your device settings, and Tandem Pro removes ads.
• Your rights: you can download, edit or permanently delete your personal data from your profile settings.

In short: Tandem is covered by GDPR, but the free app is ad-supported and data travels outside the EU. Limit ad tracking on your phone and share location only if you use location features.

#How to stay safe on Tandem

1. Watch whether they practice. A real partner uses their target language and asks about yours.
2. Stay in the app until you trust someone. Pressure to switch to WhatsApp or Telegram early is a common first step in scams.
3. Never send money, gift cards or crypto, and ignore any investment “opportunity”.
4. Keep personal details private: address, workplace, ID documents, finances.
5. Use a video call before trusting someone new; it is free on Tandem and scammers often avoid it.
6. Report and block anyone who crosses a line. It is anonymous.
